Description
The Periyar Lake Thekkady is formed by the construction of the Mulla Periyar dam across the Periyar Lake in 1895. The lake itself harbors a unique aquatic ecosystem and is one of the most visited places in Idukki, like Munnar the hill station in Kerala. Numerous little islets in the lake are witness to the intricate inherent interrelationship among the terrestrial aquatic and subterranean life forms.

A boat cruise on the Lake is perhaps the best way to watch the wildlife in the reserve. Both domestic and international travelers visit this place to enjoy spending time with the wonders of nature.
Apart from Periyar lake boating facilities, there are 7 Eco-Tourism programs in Periyar Tiger Reserve which are known for trekking and camping in Idukki. These packages are provided under the supervision of the Periyar Tiger Reserve Conservation Foundation.
Boating at Periyar Lake is one of the major attractions at Thekkady. And if you are lucky, you will get a unique opportunity to view wildlife at a closer distance from the boat. The probable animals that you may see while boating is Bison, Gaur, Wild Elephants, Sambhar and a wide variety of birds.
