Attractions of Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary
Highlights
Situated on the banks of Vembanad Lake, Kumarakom bird sanctuary is one of the known bird sanctuaries after Thattekad Bird Sanctuary in Kottayam district of Kerala. The Bird Sanctuary is spread across an area of 14 acres and is the hotspot of migratory birds such as Siberian stork, egret, darter, heron, and teal etc.
Houseboats and motorboats are available for hire for cruising from the sanctuary towards Pathiramanal and nearby areas such as Kaipuzha Muttu, Narakathara, Thollayiram Kayal and Poothapandi Kayal for bird watching. Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) is also operating a backwater resort named Waterscapes, adjacent to the bird sanctuary.

The main attractions of Kumarakom bird sanctuary are local birds such as the waterfowl, cuckoo, owl, egret, heron and the water duck, as well as the migratory Siberian cranes. Parrots, teal, larks, flycatchers, wood beetle etc.
The best time to watch migratory birds is from November to February.
