Alamparai fort is one of the least known historic places found on the southern outskirts of Chennai. It is around 111 km away from Chennai and is near ECR Road towards Pondicherry.
Alamparai was a seaport in the historical times and was constructed during 1736 and 1740 AD. The fort was initially under the control of the Nawab of Arcot- Doste Ali Khan, and was later given to the French. After the Carnatic wars, when the French lost the battle against the British, the fort came under the control of the British and was demolished in 1760.
The ruins of Alamparai Fort lies near Kadappakkam, a village 50 km from Mamallapuram. The ruins were also damaged in the earthquake that happened on the Indian Ocean during the year 2004. Even though the place has got much importance in history, this location is not maintained properly by the Department of Archaeology
Alamparai Fort is situated on the shores of Bay of Bengal and has lagoons around, which gives a picturesque look of the surrounding area. With a neat sandy beach and backwater, the ruins of the Fort is a treat for your eyes and is a perfect place for a weekend outing.
