Madras Crocodile Bank and Herpetology Research Centre, Chennai
Description
Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Centre for Herpetology (MCBT) or simply Madras Crocodile Bank is a reptile zoo and herpetology research station. Crocodile Park Chennai is situated 40 km south of Chennai, Tamil Nadu on the East Coast Road(ECR) at Vadanemmeli near Thiruvidandhai, close to the Bay of Bengal, on the way to Mamallapuram.
The Madras Crocodile Bank is established in 1976 with the specific goal of securing breeding populations of the three species of Indian crocodile and so far has grown more than a typical zoo.
Madras Crocodile Bank Trust was established with the aim of saving three endangered Indian species of crocodile—the marsh or mugger crocodile, the saltwater crocodile, and the gharial, which at the time of the founding of the trust were all nearing extinction.
Named as the biggest crocodile sanctuary in India, crocodile park Chennai covers an area of 8.5 acres and also is recognized as the first crocodile breeding center in Asia. Now the zoo contains 14 species of crocodiles, 10 species of turtles, 3 species of snakes, and 1 species of lizard
