Vellappara Waterfalls: The hidden waterfall near Urumbikkara Hills

Those who have visited Urumbikkara have not missed Vembly Waterfalls and Vadakkemala Waterfalls, but have you heard of Vellappara waterfalls?
Vellapara waterfalls is one of the hidden gems and the best among Vembly falls and Vadakkemala falls. Falling from a height of 300-400 feet Vellappara Waterfalls is considered as one of the tallest waterfalls after Aruvikachal Waterfalls in Kottayam district.
Situated about 12kms from Mundakayam, Vellappara waterfalls is on the way to Urumbikkara hills. Urumbikkara hills or simply Urumbi hills is known for offroad tourist destinations such as Irumulachi Kallu and Madhamakulam. Both of these are famous tourist spots in Idukki district for adventure lovers.
How to Reach Vellappara Waterfalls:
There are two routes to reach Vellappara:
- Route 1: Mundakkayam - Boyce Estate Road(take left, after Peruvanthanam Police Station) - Kokkayar- Vellappara Waterfalls (about 12kms)
- Route 2: Mundakayam - Kootikkal - Kokkayar -Vellappara falls (about 13kms)
Kokkayar is considered to be the base station for Urumbikkara trip and Vellappara Waterfalls is about 6kms from Kokkayar. KSRTC, as well as private buses, plies occasionally from Mundakkayam connecting Kokkayar with rest of the places.
Wembly waterfalls is a few meters before Vellappara waterfalls. You will be able to see Vembly falls on the way itself. Vellappara is not visible from the main road and there is no signboards present there.
The only identification mark which we can say is: after crossing a few meters from Wembley falls, you will see an unpaved road towards the right(at the very next sharp curve after Vembly falls).
You may need to park your vehicle here on the roadside and walk for about 10-15minutes in order to reach the waterfall. If you are an off-road junkie, you can skip this walk and do a small off-road ride till the waterfalls.
