Ammachi Kottaram is one of the lesser known tourist attraction in Idukki district of Kerala. Situated near Kuttikanam, Ammachi Kottaram offers a different aspect of Idukki surrounded by big trees and silent forest.

The Malayalam movie Carbon(2017) has used Ammachi Kottaram as one of the main locations. Although many movies were shot here before, the movie Carbon features Ammachi Kottaram extensively with great visuals of indoor and outdoor.

Ammachi Kottaram was the summer retreat of the wife of the erstwhile Maharaja of Travancore. The term ‘Ammachi’ means Mother, however  ‘Ammachi’ was the title held by the consorts of the ruling Maharajah of Travancore.

Ammachi Kottaram in total consists of 3 rooms, 2 halls, 1 visiting room, a Nadumuttam, and then Dining hall, Kitchen, store room and 2 secret passages.

Although the palace is under the ruins, this place is worth a visit on your next trip to Idukki. If you love to explore the history of places, this will be something interesting for you.

How to Reach Ammachi Kottaram:

Ammachi Kottaram is about 1.5km from Kuttikkanam. If you are coming from Kottayam/Kanjirapally side you need to turn right at "Beans and Flavours Café" just before Kuttikanam town. And then continue on that road for almost 1 km. After crossing some distance, you will see a gate on the left side of the road, which is the entrance gate for Ammachi Kottaram.

Kuttikkanam is well connected to other areas like Kanjirapally, Kumily, Kottayam and Vagamon.

Aammachi Kottaram Stay:

Stay option is not available in Ammachi Kottaram as its a private property now. There any many budget stay options available in Kuttikanam and nearby areas. Kuttikanaam is also the gateway to many other tourist destinations like Thekkady, Periyar Tiger Reserve, and Vagamon.
